Basilica of the Visitation of Mary
Svatý Kopeček, Olomouc, Czech Republic
The Basilica of the Visitation of Mary (Bazilika Navštívení Panny Marie) in the locality of Svatý Kopeček, (Olomouc), originated from a chapel containing a Statue of the Virgin on the Holy Hill, venerated by the faithful locals. The history of the devotion to the Virgin in this area dates back to the 16th century, when a vow made by a local, Jan Andrýsek, after being granted grace by Mary, prompted the construction of a chapel with the miraculous statue of the Virgin. Later in the centuries, devotion did not fade and the site – later transformed into a basilica – is today the destination for many pilgrims, who come to contemplate, pray and listen to God. Besides its immense cultural value, the Basilica of the Visitation is foremost the place “for all those people who seek God’s face in their lives, submit their prayers at the hand of Virgin Mary and are eager to meet Him, who is the best Father”.
