The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Máriapócs in Hungary was built around a small wooden church containing the icon of the Virgin Mary in the 17th century. The icon of the Virgin Mary, who miraculously cried tears in 1696 (as in the following years), started to gather crowds from all over the region to see the wonders of Máriapócs and many of them were cured by touching the icon. The image was then relocated to the Stephansdom in Vienna upon the will of the Austrian Emperor, but a copy is still preserved in today’s basilica in Máriapócs. The sanctuary of Our Lady, which is visited yearly by 600.000 pilgrims, calls for Faith in Mary’s intercession to God and is a place of consolation for many in times of need.
